BYD Seagull Tyre Rotation and Pressure — Patterns, Specs, Procedure
The BYD Seagull is a small FWD electric hatchback. Tyre rotation is the cheapest way to extend tyre life by 30-50% and avoid replacing all 4 at once. Pressures and rotation pattern below.
Factory tyre size
Most markets: 175/65 R15 on the base trim, 185/55 R16 on the top trim. Load index 84-87, speed rating H (210 km/h).
Recommended cold pressures
175/65 R15 (base trim)
| Load | Front | Rear | |------|-------|------| | Normal (1-2 occupants) | 2.4 bar / 35 psi | 2.4 bar / 35 psi | | Full load (4 occupants) | 2.6 bar / 38 psi | 2.7 bar / 39 psi | | Long motorway | 2.5 bar / 36 psi | 2.5 bar / 36 psi |
185/55 R16 (top trim)
| Load | Front | Rear | |------|-------|------| | Normal | 2.4 bar / 35 psi | 2.4 bar / 35 psi | | Full load | 2.5 bar / 36 psi | 2.6 bar / 38 psi |
Always check cold (parked overnight, not after driving).
Why pressure matters for an EV
Under-inflated tyres on the Seagull:
- Increase rolling resistance — range drops 5-10% at 2.0 bar vs 2.4 bar
- Wear sidewalls and shoulders prematurely
- Make 'low tyre' TPMS warning frequent
- Reduce wet traction (worst case: aquaplaning)
Over-inflated (2.8+ bar):
- Centre of tread wears, edges don't
- Harsher ride
- Reduced contact patch in corners
Stick to 2.4 bar for normal driving. Top up monthly.
Rotation pattern (FWD)
The Seagull is FWD — front tyres wear faster than rear (drive + steering on the front axle).
Standard FWD cross pattern (without spare):
- Front Left → Rear Right
- Front Right → Rear Left
- Rear Left → Front Left (no cross)
- Rear Right → Front Right (no cross)
In diagram form: fronts cross to rear, rears go straight to front.
5-tyre rotation (if you carry a full-size spare):
- Front Left → Rear Right
- Front Right → Spare
- Spare → Rear Left
- Rear Left → Front Right
- Rear Right → Front Left
Most Seagull markets ship with a tyre repair kit, not a spare — so the 4-tyre pattern is standard.
Frequency
Every 10,000 km. EVs eat tyres faster than ICE due to instant torque — rotate to spread the wear.
DIY rotation procedure
- Park on level ground. Switch car off.
- Loosen all 4 wheel nuts before jacking (~half a turn each, just enough to break torque).
- Jack one corner at a time, set on jack stand. Remove wheel.
- Mark each wheel with chalk: FL, FR, RL, RR (use the inside sidewall).
- Move wheels per the FWD cross pattern.
- Refit each wheel. Hand-tighten nuts in star pattern.
- Lower car. Final torque to 105 Nm in star pattern.
- Repeat for all 4 corners.
- Reset TPMS if your car has direct sensors per wheel: Settings → Vehicle → TPMS → Reset.
Total time: 30-45 minutes for 4-tyre rotation.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the chalk markings — you forget which wheel went where.
- Wrong torque (too high cracks alloy; too low loosens).
- Not following star pattern when tightening (warps brake disc).
- Not resetting TPMS — false alarms after the rotation.
- Rotating only fronts (against the pattern) — doesn't actually help.
Cost: DIY vs workshop
| Approach | Cost | |----------|------| | DIY (one-time tools €30-50, then free) | €0 ongoing | | Independent workshop | €20-40 | | BYD Service | €40-70 |

FAQ
What size tyres does the BYD Seagull use?
175/65 R15 (base) or 185/55 R16 (top trim).
What pressure should I run?
2.4 bar (35 psi) all round for normal load. Add 0.2-0.3 bar rear when fully loaded. Check cold.
Why rotate FWD tyres?
Front axle is drive + steering. Wears 2x faster than rear. Without rotation you replace 2 tyres at 25,000 km then 2 more at 50,000 km. With rotation you replace all 4 at 50,000 km.
How often should I rotate?
Every 10,000 km on EVs.
What's the wheel torque?
105 Nm in star pattern.
